Chapter Nine

We’re going back to Washington. Don’t say anything. Polly will try to trap us here. If Polly and Mara want this house so badly, let them have it.

Nolan stared at his bandaged arm, the words he’d overheard echoing in his mind. Lily was leaving Lucky Valley. But, more to the point, she was leaving him.

And, what was worse, his name didn’t even come up as a consideration in the whispered conversation between Lily and her brother. He knew she was close to her siblings. He accepted that it was a club he’d never be let into, but he thought his love, their love for each other, would at least factor into any decision making.

Nolan told himself to wait that she would say something to him, tell him, try to explain. He made a point of standing by her, of talking to her. He gave her opportunity after opportunity to start the conversation. She didn’t. She pretended like everything was normal—well, as normal as could be under the strange circumstances.

Polly fed the guests so many snacks that an evening meal wasn’t necessary. The drain of keeping seven people enthralled was beginning to take its toll on her, as was evidenced by the slump of her shoulders and the tired lines forming around her eyes. He didn’t want to be the one to tell her that they’d summoned a demon upstairs. Luckily it didn’t look like he’d have to. Lily had pulled her aunt aside. He could hear the faint trace of their whispers in the living room.

Nolan walked around the library, watching and listening. The game had ended, but not the conversations. Frank and Marion sat beside each other. Their moody son pouted by himself slumped over in a chair. Junior’s fingers twitched as if they could still feel his confiscated phone. Nolan wondered how the kid really got his black eye. He highly doubted it was a tree branch like the Elliotts claimed. Lily might think they were boring, but Nolan felt like they were hiding something.

Nolan focused his shifter hearing on eavesdropping while staring at the spines of the books.

“I’m missing a knitting needle,” Marion said to her husband. “Do you think it’s outside?”

“If it is, the storm has blown it away. We’ll get you a new one when we get home,” Frank assured her. There was tension in their voices, but that could easily be explained considering all that was going on.

“It sounds bad out there,” Marion whispered. “Do you think we’re safe here?”

“House feels sturdy enough,” Frank answered.

“If anything happens to my truck…” Willy mumbled to himself as he stared out the window at the storm. “If I don’t stop more than fifteen minutes every four hours, I should still be able to make the long haul.”

Janice was trying to fall asleep in a chair. She kept swatting at the air next to her head, but he didn’t see an insect or anything that might be bothering her. Sabrina huddled in a corner with Brett. He assumed they were commiserating over their lost friend.
